How To Protect Your Salon With Fire Safety Equipment

06/03/2023 • by Chris Bird

It’s important for hair, beauty and cosmetic salons to ensure their employees, clients and premises are protected and safe from the risk of fires. For fire safety, salons are considered to be a low risk as they are usually smaller premises. As salons are usually smaller premises, staff will know the building well and will be able to guide customers outside in the event of a fire.

One of the main fire safety risks in a salon are electrical equipment being used including straighteners, dryers, waxing pots and laser machines etc. Due to the wide range of electrical equipment frequently being used, there is a risk of electricity overload that could result in a fire particularly if the equipment is not regularly PAT tested.

At Fire Protection Shop we recommend for each level of the salon you will need to have two fire extinguishers including foam or water (one for carbonaceous fires e.g. involving materials such as paper or fabric) and a CO2 extinguisher for electrical fires. Dry powder fire extinguishers are unadvisable as they are commonly used on flammable liquid fires and they cannot be used in a small space as the extinguishants can fill up the room and cause a lot of mess. The fire extinguishers can be purchased either in red or in stainless steel.

Along with fire extinguishers, fire safety signs are also recommended in order to show where the fire exit is and what fires the fire extinguisher can be used on. Health and safety signs are also ideal to show how to administer first aid etc.

Available from Fire Protection Shop we offer fire safety packs that are catered for hair salons that include water and co2 fire extinguishers, fire blankets and fire extinguisher I.D signs.

Emergency lighting is also recommended to have in place in order for your staff and customers to find their way out of the building in the event of an electrical failure. This is crucial for safely exiting a building especially if the premises has corridors or stairways in your premises.

For larger premises that are part of a multi-occupied building, it is recommended to have a fire drill conducted at least once a year. This is so that your staff are reminded and aware of where they need to go in the event of a fire.

One of the best defences against fire is having your staff trained. This is why at Fire Protection Shop we offer fire training online for up to 5 people along with basic fire awareness, enhanced fire safety training and fire marshal training.

If you are unsure what fire equipment you need, a member of the Fire Protection Shop team can visit your premises and complete a fire risk assessment. A fire risk assessment will involve a qualified member of the team assessing what fire risks are present at your premises and what can be put in place to prevent the fire but also how to contain the fire if a fire does occur.
