Fluorine-Free Fire Extinguishers

Non-PFAS fluorine-free fire extinguishers, like water and ECO foam models, offer a cleaner, safer alternative. They effectively tackle Class A fires without leaving behind toxic residues. Fire safety is essential, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of the environment.

The UK Ban On PFAS

PFAS is not banned. The UK banned PFOS 10 years ago and will ban PFOA in July 2025. PFAS, however, is not banned as this ban doesn't apply to all PFAS chemicals.

PFOA and PFOS are harmful and in the past, were widely used in foam fire extinguishers. This new ban aims to reduce environmental and health risks by cutting out PFOA. In the future, we expect all PFAS to be banned so businesses should start switching to fluorine-free alternatives (F3).

More restrictions on other PFAS chemicals may follow in the future (not likely until circa 2030/31).

What Is A Non-PFAS Fire Extinguisher?

A non-PFAS fire extinguisher is a fire extinguisher that does not contain PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances).

PFAS are synthetic chemicals found in some firefighting foams that can linger in the environment and pose health risks.

Instead, non-PFAS fire extinguishers use safer alternatives like water or water with additives. They effectively put out Class A fires, that involve materials like wood, paper, and textiles. These fire extinguishers are a cleaner, eco-friendly choice for businesses looking to improve fire safety without harming the environment.

What Are The Physical Effects Of PFAS?

PFAS chemicals can build up in the body over time. They have been linked to liver damage, weakened immune response, and hormone disruption. Studies suggest they may increase the risk of cancer, high cholesterol, and fertility issues. PFAS can also affect thyroid function and child development. Their long-lasting nature makes them a growing health concern.

PFAS have been found to exist in rainwater, plants, lakes, oceans, the air and even breast milk. These forever chemicals are causing irreversible effects on the world we live in.

Do I Need To Replace Existing Fire Extinguishers?

You don’t need to replace your fire extinguishers right now. However, new legislation is expected soon.

Under British Standards, you do however need to service your extinguishers. All fire extinguishers need an extended service every five years, except for CO2. This includes foam, water, powder, and wet chemical units. During servicing, they are tested, inspected, and refilled if compliant.

Regular maintenance keeps your extinguishers safe, effective, and cost-efficient. With expert servicing, they stay in top condition, ready to tackle fires when needed.

Environmental Impact of PFAS

PFAS chemicals are a major environmental concern. They don’t break down easily, leading to long-term contamination in soil and water. PFAS can pollute drinking water, harming wildlife and ecosystems. They build up in fish and animals, entering the food chain. This widespread pollution makes cleanup difficult and costly. Many countries are now phasing out PFAS to reduce their impact.

Positive Corporate Image, Switching to Non-PFAS

Switching to PFAS-free fire extinguishers boosts your company’s reputation. It shows a commitment to safety, sustainability, and social responsibility. Customers and stakeholders prefer businesses that take eco-friendly actions. Phasing out PFAS helps you stay ahead of future regulations and builds trust with the public. A cleaner, greener approach strengthens your brand image and sets you apart from competitors.

Companies like 3M have announced plans to cease PFAS production by the end of 2025.
