What Fire Safety Laws Should Your Business Be Following?

06/03/2023 • by Chris Bird

To keep your business and premises safe it is crucial to follow fire safety laws which is the responsibility of the business owner but an employee can take on this role also.

Fire safety legislation in the UK is categorised into three jurisdictions; Scotland, Northern Ireland England and Wales. The jurisdictions for each place have a list of legislations that businesses must follow in order to prevent hazards to someone’s life.

The government’s website features all of the legislation in full detail:

England and Wales – The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 ;

Scotland – The Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and The Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006 ;

Northern Ireland – The Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 and The Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010 .

Commonly known as the RRO (The Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005) includes fire safety measures for businesses to follow including the below:

Protecting your premises with fire-fighting equipment as stated in the RRO fire appropriate fire-fighting equipment must be provided including fire extinguishers, hose reels and sprinklers. By having fire-fighting equipment at your premises it could be the difference between life and death.

Fire extinguishers are crucial for all businesses to tackle fires. A range of fire extinguishers can be purchased to tackle a variety of fires. Sprinklers and hose reels are not a requirement for all businesses. Businesses including constructed commercial buildings that are 5,000 square feet or larger and restaurants etc are recommended to have hose reels and sprinklers. Buy Fire Extinguishers

Fire safety signs are recommended by the RRO as it says all places of work must have adequate fire safety signs which will point staff and visitors towards fire safety equipment, fire exits and emergency escape routes. Buy fire safety signs

At Fire Protection Shop we recommend the following signs:

  • Fire extinguisher ID signs

  • Fire exit signs

  • Fire action signs

  • Fire door signs

  • Health and safety signs

  • Danger, caution and warning signs

A fire safety log book is required by the RRO which should include current requirements for your fire extinguishers, fire doors, fire alarms etc (fire safety equipment) and evacuation process, fire officer visits and training etc (fire safety procedures). Buy a fire safety logbook

Fire safety equipment will also need to be installed including fire detectors and fire alarms which will alert staff and visitors of a fire. By having this equipment it provides early detection of fire for staff and visitors to be able to safely evacuate the building. To help evacuate the building safely, emergency lighting is also recommended to help illuminate the way. Buy an alarm/detector

If you are an employer, landlord, owner or occupier of a business or other non-domestic premises in England and Wales, you are responsible for the fire safety of your premises and are classed as the responsible person.

Fire safety training and drills are a crucial defence and the best defence against a fire is to train your staff. As an employer, you are required to ensure your employees are made aware of fire precautions at work. At Fire Protection Shop we offer a range of fire safety training courses to keep your staff well trained when dealing with a fire. Book a training course

Fire risk assessments are a must if you are an employer, owner, landlord or occupier of a business or other non-domestic premises, you are responsible for fire safety and are known as the ‘responsible person’. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 details what you have to do to comply with the law. (The rules are different in Scotland and Northern Ireland – please ring us for specific advice).
