What is a Class A Fire Extinguisher Used for?

Water fire extinguishers are commonly used for Class A fires, however, ABC powder and foam extinguishers are also effective. Class A fires involve the combustion of everyday materials like cloth, wood, paper, rubber, and certain plastics.

To operate a fire extinguisher: pull the pin, aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, squeeze the trigger, and sweep the nozzle slowly from side to side.

Class A Fire Extinguishers

If you need a fire extinguisher specifically for Class A fires (involving wood, paper, cloth, and other ordinary combustibles), most fire extinguishers will be suitable, except for CO₂ extinguishers.

Do NOT use or purchase a CO₂ extinguisher for Class A fires, as they are ineffective on solid materials and will not cool the fire to prevent re-ignition.

Dry powder fire extinguishers are multipurpose and can be used for more than one fire classification. These extinguishers have an ABC rating and are effective against combustible materials (Class A), flammable liquids (Class B), and gases (Class C).
