A. ABC dry powder fire extinguishers can be used on Class A solid combustibles, Class B flammable liquids, Class C flammable gases and electrical fires.
Class A – Solid Combustibles (wood, paper, cloth etc.)
Class B – Flammable Liquids (oils, solvents, alcohol, gasoline etc.)
Class C – Flammable Gases (propane, butane, petroleum gases etc)
A. Similarly to water fire extinguishers, AFFF foam fire extinguishers are designed to combat fires involving combustible solids, such as wood, cloth and paper. However, in addition to Class A fires, the AFFF foam fire extinguisher can be used on Class B flammable liquid fires. AFFF foam works by creating a thin layer between the flame and oxygen.
A. The foam in the fire extinguisher is Aqueous Film Forming Foam, commonly referred to as AFFF, and creates a layer over combustible liquids, smothering and quenching fires. AFFF works by suffocating or dousing the fire and sealing in any flammable vapours, preventing re-ignition. The foam will put out liquid fires by creating a thin barrier between the surface of the flammable fluid and the flame.
A. Fire extinguishers must be serviced every 12 months, this is known as the “basic service”. This service should be performed in accordance with British Standard BS5036-3 and conducted by a third-party, appropriately trained technician.
A: BS EN 1869:2019 is a European standard for fire blankets. This standard specifies the requirements for fire blankets used in controlling small fires in domestic and non-domestic environments.
This document covers the design, construction, performance and labelling of fire blankets. It is intended to ensure their safety and effectiveness for use in specific environments.BS EN 1869:2019 specifies requirements for materials, size, packaging, labelling, and testing of fire blankets. The standard also includes requirements for the maintenance and storage of fire blankets, including instructions for use and disposal.
This standard is intended to be used in conjunction with other relevant fire safety standards and regulations, such as building codes and fire safety codes. It is important to ensure that fire blankets comply with BS EN 1869:2019 to ensure their safety and effectiveness in the event of a fire.
A: Fire blankets are designed to be used on small fires, such as those involving cooking oils and fats, clothing, and electrical equipment. They are not intended to be used on large fires, such as structural fires, as they are not big enough to cover the entire fire.
A: To use a fire blanket:
Grab the blanket and remove it from its container.
Ensure that the blanket covers the entire fire.
Hold the blanket over the fire using the corners of the blanket, making sure to keep your arms and hands protected from the heat.
Slowly lower the blanket onto the fire, smothering the flames and cutting off the supply of oxygen.
Once the fire is out, leave the blanket in place and call the fire department.
It's important to note that fire blankets are not designed to be used on people who are on fire. In this situation, it's best to use a fire extinguisher or cover the person with a heavy, fire-resistant material, such as a rug or a coat, to smother the flames.
